UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Senior
Brittney Fair led three players in double figures with 14 points, but Saginaw Valley State outscored Wisconsin-Parkside 24-4 in the third quarter on its way to a 77-46 victory over the Rangers in the season opener for both teams on Saturday in James E. O'Neill Arena as part of the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge.
The Cardinals held a 39-30 lead at the intermission, but opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run and then held the Rangers scoreless over the final 5:30 of the quarter to take a 63-34 lead into the final quarter.
Fair was 5-of-11 from the floor to lead the Rangers and she also added two assists and two rebounds.
Blair Arthur and
Olivia Montague each tallied 10 points for the Rangers. Arthur added a team-leading four assists, while Montague topped the team with three three-point baskets.
Kauri Jensen had four points and a team-leading five rebounds, while
Shelby Cheston added four rebounds and two blocked shots.
Saginaw Valley State was led by Katelyn Carriere who had 19 points and Abby Duffy who scored 14 points. Five Cardinals reached double figures in scoring as Emily Wendlin had 12 points and Grace Whelan and Anna Hall each scored 10 points.
Saginaw Valley State shot 50.8 percent from the floor for the game, while Wisconsin-Parkside was limited to just 28.8 percent shooting. The Cardinals also outrebounded the Rangers 48-30.
The Rangers got off to a solid start and after spotting Saginaw Valley State an early 6-2 lead as two free throws by Fair and a jumper by Arthur knotted the score at 6-6 with 4:57 to play in the first quarter.
After a layup by Fair tied the game at 8-8, the Cardinals used a layup by Anna Hall and a jumper by Whelan to take a 12-8 lead with 2:35 left in the opening stanza.
The Rangers rallied to take its first lead of the game. Montague drained a three-pointer to cut the lead to 12-11 with 2:19 to play and Arthur followed with a three-pointer following a Saginaw Valley State free throw that put UW-Parkside in front 14-13 at the 1:26 mark of the quarter.
Saginaw Valley State regained the lead on a layup by Halee Nieman, but Montague drained another three-pointer giving the Rangers a 17-15 lead with 49 seconds left in the quarter.
The Cardinals responded with a three-pointer by Carriere to take an 18-17 lead after the opening quarter.
Wisconsin-Parkside opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run that was capped by a three-pointer by Fair that gave the Rangers its largest lead of the contest at 24-20 with 7:40 left before halftime.
Back-to-back layups by Wendlin tied the score at 24-24 before a Montague free throw gave the Rangers their final lead of the afternoon at 25-24 with 6:39 remaining in the quarter.
Saginaw Valley State then closed the second quarter on a 15-5 run to take a 39-30 lead into the intermission.
The Cardinals then took control of the game by outscoring the Rangers 24-4 in the decisive third quarter.
The Rangers will continue play in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge as it visits Northwood on Sunday (Nov. 13) for a 12 p.m. game
