Strong First Half Carries Northwood Past Wisconsin-Parkside

MIDLAND, Mich. -- Senior Brittney Fair scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds, but Northwood shot 60.7 percent from the floor in the first half on its way to a 67-42 victory over Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday in the second day of action in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge at Riepma Arena.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 0-2 on the season, shot 35.4 percent from the floor in the first half but it was not enough to stay with the Timberwolves. Northwood shot 66.7 percent from the field in the first quarter and 53.8 percent from the floor in the second quarter to take a commanding 42-25 lead into the intermission.

Fair topped the Rangers in scoring for the second straight game as she was 4-of-10 from the floor and 1-of-2 from the three-point line.

Olivia Montague led Wisconsin-Parkside with a pair of three-point baskets and finished with eight points and a steal. Taylor Stephen scored six points, grabbed four rebounds and handed out four assists, while Clarisa Martinez scored four points, had two rebounds and a blocked a shot.

Northwood, which improved to 2-0 on the season, was led by Maddy Seeley who scored 17 points. Lindsay Orwat finished with 16 points, while Jordyn Nurenberg had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

Montague and Fair began the game with back-to-back three-pointers and a jumper by Fair gave Wisconsin-Parkside an 8-6 lead with 7:36 to play in the opening quarter.

Northwood used a 6-0 run to take a 12-8 lead with 6:13 left in the opening quarter.

After a jumper by Fair closed the Timberwolves lead to 16-14 with 4:21 to play, Northwood closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 22-14 lead into the second quarter.

The Timberwolves extended the run to 13-0 by scoring the first seven points of the second quarter, which gave Norwood a 29-14 lead with 7:25 to play before halftime.

A layup by Kauri Jensen got the Rangers to within 29-17 with 6:24 to play in the second quarter, but that would be as close as Wisconsin-Parkside would get for the remainder of the contest.

Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 19) when it makes its home debut against Hillsdale at 1 p.m. in DeSimone Gymnasium.
