(Apr. 24, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team went toe-to-toe with Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division leading University of Indianapolis on Friday afternoon, threatening with the tying run on base in the final inning of both games before ultimately coming up short in 6-5 and 2-1 setbacks at Greyhound Park.
Â
In the opener, the host Greyhounds (26-17, 20-10 GLVC) seized an early 3-0 before the Rangers (11-22, 10-20 GLVC) clawed back into the contest, tying the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh inning.
Â
UIndy pushed across a pair of runs in the first inning and tacked on another score in the second to secure a three run cushion. UW-Parkside's offense came alive in the third inning with a
Jake Kolasinski groundout bringing in
Patrick Cottrell. Cottrell opened the third with a single down the left field line, advancing to second on a
Bryan Wade base knock. A
Troy Bittenbender sacrifice bunt pushed Cottrell to third before scoring on the Kolasinski RBI groundout.
Â
UIndy countered in the bottom of the third, pushing across a run to reestablish a three-score edge.
Â
UW-Parkside struck again in the fourth inning with a
Nick Janssen single scoring
Darius Hampton who led off the frame with a bunt single. The Hounds utilized a sacrifice fly in the fourth to stake a 5-2 edge before the Green and White tied the game with one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh.
Â
Zach Thompson singled through the left side with two outs in the sixth, plating
DJ Peltz while
Jake Kolasinski went yard in the seventh, clearing the left center field fence to score two runs and tie the contest.
Â
UIndy landed one final punch in the bottom of the seventh, scoring on a bunt single to secure a 6-5 lead and held off a late Ranger charge in the ninth to claim the win. Parkside had the winning run on first base with two outs in the ninth before a flyout stymied the Ranger run and gave the East Division leaders the victory.
Â
Kolasinski finished with three hits and three RBIs to pace the Parkside offense while Wade and Hampton each tallied a pair of hits.
Â
Riley Phillips was saddled with the loss, pitching 6 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs.
Joseph Plaud closed out the contest, fanning two and allowing just two base runners. UIndy's Matthew Kaplanis earned the win, allowing five runs in seven innings of work while Brett Collins collected the save, handling the final inning of play.
Â
In the nightcap, UW-Parkside grabbed an early advantage but was unable to hang on falling 2-1.
Â
Thompson led off game two by safely reaching base on a UIndy fielding error, eventually scoring on a Kolasinski double to right center field, giving the visitors the 1-0 edge.
Â
Indianapolis tied the game in the second inning on a sacrifice bunt before grabbing the lead in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly.
Â
In the seventh,
AJ Kaprelian reached base on a walk and represented the tying run but the Rangers were unable to generate a run as Collins came in and recorded the final out to net his second save of the day and again stymie a late Ranger run.
Â
Josh Serio suffered the loss, tossing a complete game and striking out two while UIndy's Jordan Tackett escaped with the victory, fanning six in 6 2/3 innings of action.
Â
