Panthers Shock #8 Rangers in GLVC Semifinals

SAINT CHARLES, Mo. (Mar. 7, 2015)-- The eighth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team's Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Semifinal appearance ended in agony for the third straight season on Saturday afternoon, suffering a 68-67 overtime setback to Drury University inside Family Arena despite a 25-point effort from Jimmy Gavin.
 
Second-seeded and GLVC West Champion Drury's (20-8) Kameron Bundy hit a pair of free throws with 6.8 seconds to seize the lead in overtime. The third-seeded and GLVC East Division Champion Rangers (26-3) called a timeout with 2.5 seconds left but a turnover on the ensuing inbounds pass sealed the game for the Panthers, advancing to the GLVC Tournament Championship Game where they will face top-seeded Bellarmine University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
Andy Mazurczak tallied the first points of the extra session and the Rangers owned a 65-62 edge with 3:39 left off a Kendale McCullum three but the Panthers scored the next four points at the free throw line to grab the lead. McCullum hit a jumper with 33 ticks left to give the Rangers a 67-66 edge before Bundy toed the free throw line with 6.8 seconds left.
 
Drury stormed out of the gate, tallying eight of the first 10 points but the Rangers responded with consecutive three-pointers from Jordan Mach and Jimmy Gavin to net the score at 8-8 with 15:53 remaining in the opening stanza.
 
The Panthers reestablished a six-point cushion off a Bundy trey with 11:50 left in the first half but the Rangers countered with the next eight points to establish its first lead of the afternoon at 21-19 with 7:51 left off a Goran Zagorac tip-in basket. The 8-0 spurt was part of a larger 13-2 Ranger run as the Rangers staked a five-point lead with 4:30 left off a pair of Mazurczak free throws.
 
Drury pulled within a point with 3:32 left but the Rangers scored the final six points of the first half while Zagorac swatted away a Panther shot in the waning seconds, as Parkside enjoyed a 32-25 lead at the halftime interlude.
 
UW-Parkside pushed its advantage to nine points early in the second half off a Jordan Mach trey but the Panthers battled back, utilizing a 10-1 run to tie the game at 43 with 12:41 left in regulation. A pair of threes from Gavin reestablished a six-point Parkside lead but the Panthers again battled back, tying the game at 54 with 4:14 left in the second half. UW-Parkside again tried to gain separation, with a Mazurczak layup giving the Rangers a five point buffer with 2:06 left but was held scoreless the rest of regulation as Drury tallied the final five points, including a DaShaun Stark layup with 21 ticks left to tie the game at 60 and force overtime.
 
Gavin collected his fifth straight game of at least 20 points, netting 25 points after canning five three-pointers and hitting eight of his 14 shots from the field. Mach hit three threes and collected 12 points while Mazurczak had 12 points and three steals. Zygimantas Riauka had a team-high eight rebounds while Zagorac had seven boards and a career-high five blocks in just 14 minutes of work.
 
Bundy paced the Panthers with 28 points and seven rebounds while Cameron Adams had 10 points and seven boards.
 
The Rangers will discover their NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday night as the field of 64 teams will be unveiled at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
