(Mar. 15, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside earned a doubleheader split in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener on Sunday, pummeling Missouri University S&T 15-5 in game one before succumbing to the hosts 7-6 in a marathon 12-inning second game at the S&T Baseball Field.
In the opener, the Rangers (2-3, 1-1 GLVC) racked up 13 runs in the first four innings, pounding out 20 hits at the expense of the host Miners (5-7, 1-1 GLVC).
UW-Parkside piled on four runs in the top of the first inning, getting RBI hits from
Jake Kolasinski and
DJ Peltz, while adding two more runs off S&T defensive miscues. The Miners responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to knot the score.
The Rangers continued to pour on runs in the second inning, adding three more with
Nick Janssen scoring on a fielding error while a Peltz double to center field scored both
Ryan Ruediger and
Zach Cunningham, giving the visitors the 7-4 lead.
Three more runs crossed the plate in the third inning, getting RBI singles from Janssen and Kolasinski while plating another three runs in the fourth for the 13-4 lead.
Darius Hampton led off the fourth with a solo blast over the left field fence while Janssen collected an RBI single and
Troy Bittenbender scored
AJ Kaprelian on a sacrifice fly.
Missouri S&T added a run in the bottom of the sixth while the Rangers added single runs in both the seventh and eighth frames in the 15-5 rout.
Janssen finished four-for-five at the dish to lead the Ranger offensive attack while Peltz, Ruediger, Thompson, and Kolasinski all netted three hits on the game. Peltz additionally led the team with four RBIs in the game.
Josh Serio collected the win for the Rangers on the mound, striking out nine in seven innings of work while
Joseph Plaud handled the final two innings, yielding just one hit and fanning three batters. Ryan Bearden suffered the loss for S&T, yielding eight runs in two innings of action.
In the night cap, Missouri S&T scored twice in the fourth inning and added another score in the fifth to stake a 3-0 lead.
The Ranger offense came alive in the sixth inning, manufacturing four runs to seize the lead. Cunningham tallied the first run, scoring on a wild pitch before a Kolasinski sac fly brought in Ruediger.
Bryan Wade tilted the scales in favor of the Rangers, belting a pinch hit single up the middle to plate a pair of runs, giving UW-Parkside the 4-3 edge.
Missouri S&T extended the game with a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh pushing across the tying run and forcing extra innings.
After an uneventful eighth inning, the Rangers tallied two scores in the ninth, bringing in a run on a Kolasinski sac fly and a Miner throwing error.
Missouri S&T mirrored the Rangers in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs to extend the game once more.
S&T finally broke the stalemate with a John Ceriotti single up the middle scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th.
Wade and Janssen paced the Rangers in game two, each collecting two hits while Wade and Kolasinski both drove in a pair of runs.
Plaud was saddled with the loss, tossing the final 3 1/3 innings and striking out three. The Ranger pitching staff finished the game with 13 combined strikeouts while issuing just two walks. Mack Preston claimed the win, handling the final two innings and allowing no base runners.
The two squads close out their series on Monday with a doubleheader slated to begin at noon.
