(Mar. 16, 2015)-- Offense was in short supply for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team on Monday afternoon, dropping both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to host Missouri University S&T to close out the weekend series. The Rangers were edged 2-1 in th opener before suffering a 12-2 setback in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Rangers (2-5, 1-3 GLVC) outhit the Miners (7-7, 3-1 GLVC) but were unable to come away with the win, stranding eight runners on base in a 2-1 setback.
Missouri S&T broke up the shutout in the bottom of the third, pushing across a pair of runs on a Reed Brown double down the left field line. The Rangers got on the board in the fourth inning with
Ryan Ruediger leading off the frame with a base hit. Ruediger advanced to third on a
Jake Kolasinski outfield single before scoring on a
DJ Peltz groundout to close within a run. Missouri S&T held the Rangers off the scoreboard for the final three frames to secure the win.
Kolasinski and
Troy Bittenbender paced the Rangers at the plate, each finishing two-for-three in game one.
Mario Samuel was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs and striking out two in 2 2/3 innings of action before giving way to
Nate Stolte who yielded just two hits and struck out three over the final 3 1/3 innings of play. S&T's Aaron Bedsworth claimed the win, tossing the first six innings and allowing just one earned run while Brown handled the final inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced to collect the save.
In the nightcap, the Rangers struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first inning. Bittenbender led off the game with an infield single before scoring on a Kolasinski RBI hit to left field. S&T pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and tacked on three more in the second, staking an early 5-1 lead.
The Miners' advantage swelled to 7-1 after scoring two more runs in the fifth while the Ranger added a run in the sixth with Kolasinski blasting a solo home run but S&T responded in the bottom of the inning as Nick Ulrich hit a grand slam to up the home side's lead to 11-2. S&T pushed across another run in the bottom of the eighth to enact the mercy rule as its lead swelled to 12-2.
Bittenbender collected three hits in the second game while Kolasinski netted a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Nicolas Rana was hit with the loss, yielding five runs in two innings of action while S&T's Keith Coulson claimed the win, tossing the opening six frames and allowing two earned runs.
The Rangers open up its home slate on Saturday, taking on Rockhurst University in a GLVC twinbill at Oberbrunner Field. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
