(Feb. 14, 2015)-- The 12th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad collected its 12th consecutive victory inside DeSimone Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, leading nearly wire-to-wire to down Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Drury University 64-53 to close out interdivisional play.
The Panthers tallied the game's opening bucket but a layup from
Jalen Currie and a three the old fashioned way from
Zygimantas Riauka shifted the lead to the Rangers at 5-2 just under two minutes into the game. UW-Parkside led by just a point with 16:26 left in the first half before embarking on a 20-6 run, breaking the game open and seizing a 15-point advantage. The Rangers enjoyed a 30-17 lead after 20 minutes of play, holding Drury to shooting just 28.6 percent (six-for-21) from the floor.
Parkside's advantage swelled to 18 points off an
Espen Fjaerestad three-pointer with 14:44 left in the game but the Panthers wouldn't give up, chipping away and pulling within four with 2:26 left off a Kameron Bundy jumper. A Fjaerestad three followed by a
Jordan Mach fastbreak layup and a Riauka layup extended the Ranger lead back up to double digits as the Panthers were held scoreless the rest of the way, misfiring on all four of their shots from the field.
Riauka led the Rangers with 11 points and eight boards while
Jimmy Gavin added 10 points as all 10 players who saw action for Parkside scored at least two points.
Cameron Adams led DU with 14 points while Mike Nwelue added 10 off the bench.
UW-Parkside shot an impressive 60.9 percent (14-for-23) from the field in the second half, finishing the contest shooting 50 percent (25-for-50) and owned a sizeable 34-18 edge in points in the paint.
The Rangers, winners of six straight, closed out interdivisional play a perfect 8-0 for the first time in program history. UW-Parkside resumes divisional play on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. showdown against host McKendree University.
