(Nov. 10, 2015)-- It was a case of déjà vu for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team on Tuesday night, suffering another agonizingly close setback to a nationally-ranked Lewis University. The Rangers traded punches with the 23rd-ranked and host Flyers before ultimately suffering a 3-1 (26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 26-24) defeat to the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival inside Neil Carey Arena.
Â
Visiting UW-Parkside (19-9, 10-6 GLVC) trailed by two in the opening set before ripping off five straight points to seize a 20-17 lead. Lewis (25-4, 13-3 GLVC) quickly negated the run, tying the game at 22. The Rangers briefly regained the lead at 23-22 before Lewis benefited from a kill and a Parkside attack error to force set point. A
Jackie Langer kill tied the score at 24 but a Kill and a service ace gave the hosts the 26-24 set win.
Â
Lewis never trailed in set two, emerging with the 25-23 victory. The Flyers owned a comfortable six-point buffer before the Rangers tallied six of the next eight points, forcing a Lewis timeout with a 20-18 lead. The Green and White attempted one final run, getting kills from
Rebecca Roembke and Langer to close the gap to one by a blocking error gave Lewis the two-point win.
Â
UW-Parkside yielded the opening four points of set three before rallying to the 25-23 win, scoring the final three points of the set, capitalizing on a Lewis service error before a pair of Roembke kills gave the Green and White the win to extend the match.
Â
The Rangers scored five straight to seize a 16-12 lead in set four but the nationally-ranked Flyers answered with an 8-2 run to take a 20-18 lead. Lewis never trailed the rest of the way, taking advantage of a Ranger service error and an attack error to escape with the 26-24 set win to secure the match.
Â
The match was the second time this season the Rangers fell to the Flyers by a razor thin margin. UW-Parkside had Lewis against the ropes on Oct. 6 inside DeSimone Gymnasium, owning a 2-0 lead before yielding the final three sets, including a 16-14 defeat in the decisive fifth set.
Â
Three Rangers ended the night with a double-double, including
Lauren Hickson who posted a match-high 41 assists along with 11 digs record her sixth consecutive double-double. Roembke netted a team-high 16 kills with 13 digs while Langer collected 12 kills and 13 digs.
Meghan Conley set the tone defensively, finishing with 22 digs with
Jessi Mainczyk adding 20.
Â
The Rangers resume their road trip on Friday, traveling to the Hoosier State to face Saint Joseph's College. First serve in Rensselaer, Indiana is slated for 7 p.m.
