(Oct. 3, 2014)-- Undeterred by a two-set deficit, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team buckled down over the final three sets, emerging from the Physical Activities Center with a 3-2 (20-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, 16-14) victory over host University of Southern Indiana in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division match on Friday night.
UW-Parkside (7-6, 4-4 GLVC) secured five of the opening seven points in the first set but the host Screaming Eagles (8-5, 4-4 GLVC) stormed back, tying the game at 9-9 before building a 19-10 advantage. UW-Parkside netted eight of the next 10 before USI slammed the door on the comeback attempt, taking the opening set 25-20.
The Rangers owned a 13-11 lead in set two but yielded 14 of the next 18 points to fall 25-17. UW-Parkside led wire-to-wire in set three, securing the 25-22 win before winning set four by an identical 25-22 count to force a decisive fifth set.
Southern Indiana owned a 5-3 lead before the Rangers rattled off six straight, including five off the serve off
Rebecca Roembke to stake a 9-5 edge. The Eagles countered, taking a 10-9 lead. Parkside reclaimed the lead at 11-10 before three straight returned the lead back to USI at 13-11. Kills by
Meghan Conley and
Jackie Langer sandwiched around a USI ball handling error gave the visitors the 14-13 edge before an attack error knotted the score at 14. An Eagle service error and a Roembke kill closed the book on the final set, giving UW-Parkside the 16-14 win to secure the match.
Roembke finished the night with a double-double of 21 kills and 20 digs while
Lauren Hickson collected eight kills along with 24 assists.
Jackie Langer and
Lexi Turek each added seven kills while
Megan Pekarek led the squad with 25 assists.
Victoria Walsh paced the Rangers defensively with 26 digs while Hickson and Conley each had 10.
The Rangers finish off their road swing on Saturday afternoon, taking on Bellarmine University at 2 p.m.
