(Oct. 13, 2014)-- A sluggish start gave way to a memorable finish as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball squad rallied from a two set hole to down host Northern Michigan University 3-2 (15-25, 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-13) in a non-conference clash at Vandament Arena.
The host Wildcats (10-7) never trailed in the opening set, breezing to the 25-15 win. Northern Michigan raced out to an early 8-2 lead in the second set before the Rangers (11-7) batted back, tying the contest at 9-9. NMU scored the next three points and never trailed the rest of the way en route to a 25-20 set victory.
UW-Parkside trailed 9-8 in the third set before mounting a 9-2 run to take control of the set.
Lisa Gregerson tallied three kills during the run while
Jessi Mainczyk netted a pair of service aces. NMU pulled within three points at 19-16 but the Rangers claimed six of the final nine points for the 25-19 win to extend the match.
In the fourth set, UW-Parkside scored five of the final seven points, claiming the 25-22 win to force a decisive fifth set.
The Rangers claimed five of the first six points but the Wildcats clawed back, tying the set at 10-10. The team's traded jabs until a Gregerson kill and a NMU attack error gave the visitors the 15-13 win to secure the match.
Gregerson finished with a season-high 16 kills to lead the Rangers while
Allyn Krenz added 11.
Jackie Langer contributed nine kills and 10 digs while
Lexi Turek had eight kills.
Megan Pekarek finished with 31 assists with
Lauren Hickson adding 20 along with 12 digs.
Meghan Conley collected a team-high 22 digs while
Rebecca Roembke notched 16.
Sonja Burnson finished with six of the team's eight blocks.
The Rangers return to the court on Friday afternoon, facing Saginaw Valley State in the seventh-annual Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament in Aurora, Illinois.
