(Oct. 11, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside volleyball team overpowered visiting Saint Joseph's College 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-16) on Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division clash inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Pumas (4-13, 2-9 GLVC) tallied the opening three points and jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first set. The Rangers (10-7, 6-5 GLVC) fought back, tying the game at 15-15 on a
Sonja Burnson kill before grabbing the lead on the next point courtesy of a St. Joseph's attack error. UW-Parkside never trailed the rest of the set, putting away the visitors with a 25-22 win in the first set.
In set two the Pumas owned a 12-11 edge before the hosts collected six straight points, seizing the lead and never looking back en route to a 25-19 set win. UW-Parkside utilized a similar mid-set surge in the third and final set to secure the match victory. The Rangers trailed 14-12 before collecting the next seven points, turning a two point deficit into a five point lead on their way to a 25-16 set win to close the match.
Rebecca Roembke led the Rangers with 13 kills while adding nine digs defensively.
Sonja Burnson and
Allyn Krenz each added seven kills while
Lauren Hickson had six and a team-high 17 assists.
Megan Pekarek had 15 assists while
Victoria Walsh led the Parkside defensive efforts, collecting 17 digs.
The Rangers have little time to savor the win, returning to the court on Monday night for a non-conference showdown against Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan. Gametime is slated for 5:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
