SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (Jan. 9, 2014)-- Zygimantas Riauka poured on 28 points and notched his fifth straight double-double as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday night, downing University of Missouri-Saint Louis 89-76 inside the Mark Twain Building.
The host Tritons (9-3, 3-1 GLVC) roared out to a 7-2 lead just two minutes into the game. The Rangers (10-2, 3-0 GLVC) answered with the next 10 points, securing a five-point advantage with 15:55 left off a
Jordan Mach three. The Parkside advantage swelled to 13-points with 8:21 remaining in the first half on an
Andis Malahovskis free throw as the visitors led 42-35 at the half.
The Ranger lead increased to nine in the second stanza before UMSL battled back, retaking the lead with 11 minutes left off a Derek Shouse three-pointer.
Jimmy Gavin reclaimed the lead for the Rangers with a three of his own the next possession but UMSL responded in kind with Darian Cartharn knocking down a trey of his own. Gavin sunk a three on the next Ranger offensive series, reclaiming the lead at 62-60 with 10:02 remaining. UW-Parkside led the rest of the way en route to the 13-point decision.
Riauka led all scorers with a career-best 28 points, hitting 10 of his 13 shots from the field while wrangling 10 rebounds and dishing out five assists.
Andy Mazurczak added 19 points while Gavin came off the bench and sunk three three-pointers, ending the night with 12 points.
Jordan Mach collected 10 points while notching five assists.
Femi John paced the Tritons with 19 points while Cartharn and Shouse added 17 and 11 points, respectively.
UW-Parkside ended the game shooting 55 percent (33-for-60) from the floor and owned a 37-29 rebounding edge. The Rangers dominated the paint with a 46-22 edge in points in the paint while enjoying a 17-5 advantage in second change points.
The Rangers close out their tour of Saint Louis on Saturday, facing Maryville University at 3 p.m.
