SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 5, 2014)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team remained undefeated in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Sunday afternoon inside DeSimone Gymnasium, pulling away in the second half for a dominating 78-57 victory over league newcomer Truman State University.
The Rangers (9-2, 2-0 GLVC) led by five at the half before putting the Bulldogs (8-3, 1-2 GLVC) to rest in the second half with a 37-7 scoring binge.
Visiting Truman tallied the opening two points of the game in what proved to be its lone lead of the contest with UW-Parkside scoring the next 12 points for a 10-point cushion with 16:44 left. The UW-Parkside lead swelled to 12 points but the Bulldogs cut the deficit to five at the halftime intermission.
The Ranger lead was reduced to a single possession after Reed Mells hit a jumper with 17:47 left but UW-Parkside responded with a 37-7 outburst over the next 10 minutes, obliterating the nets with nine treys during the stretch.
Jimmy Gavin was dialed in from distance hitting back-to-back-to-back three-pointers twice during the Parkside scoring binge. The Rangers led by at least 20 points the rest of the way en route to the 21-point win.
Gavin came off the bench and led all scorers, piling on a career-high 22 points in just 24 minutes of action. The sophomore guard was nearly perfect from the field, finishing eight-for-nine from the floor and six-for-seven from three-point land.
Zygimantas Riauka collected his fourth double-double in as many games, finishing with 17 points and 12 boards.
Jordan Mach and
Andy Mazurczak each had 11 points while
Colt Grandstaff dished out a team-high six assists.
Kyle Kanaskie led Truman with 11 points while Mike Carlson added 10 points and a team-high five boards.
UW-Parkside dominated nearly every statistical category, owning a 38-25 rebounding edge, a 19-8 edge in points off turnovers and a 31-19 advantage in bench production. The Rangers shot 55.4 percent (31-for-56) on the afternoon, including 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from beyond the arc while holding the Bulldogs to shooting just 39 percent (23-for-59).
Parkside embarks on a four-game road swing beginning on Thursday against the University of Missouri-Saint Louis. Tipoff against the Tritons is slated for 7:30 p.m.
