Rangers Race Past USI, 82-71

SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 25, 2014)-- Never trailing, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team knocked off its third ranked opponent in the past six days, pleasing the partisan crowd of 1,650 inside DeSimone Gymnasium by downing ninth-ranked University of Southern Indiana 82-71 on Saturday for the Rangers ninth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference win.

The Rangers (16-2, 9-0 GLVC) came out of the gate swinging, hitting their opening five shots of the game, building a 13-4 lead just three minutes into the game. The nationally-ranked Screaming Eagles (14-3, 6-3 GLVC) crawled back into the contest, tying the game at 28 off an Aaron Nelson jumper. UW-Parkside quickly upped its lead up to five before taking a slim 41-40 lead into the locker room at half.

In the second half, a tenous three-point advantage turned into a nine-point buffer with Mohamed Mohamed hitting a free throw with 6:42 remaining. The Ranger lead ballooned to as many as 14 points before settling on the final 11 point margin.

Jimmy Gavin had a monster second half, scoring 20 of his 22 points in the final 20 minutes of play, finishing seven-for-10 from the floor while grabbing five rebounds. Riauka registered his ninth double-double of the season, tallying 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Colt Grandstaff added 18 points while Andy Mazurczak chipped in eight points while leading the team with six assists.

Nelson poured on 31 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace Southern Indiana, with 22 of his points coming in the first half. Lawrence Thomas was the only other Eagle in double figures, contributing 11 points.

The Rangers scorched the nets in the opening half, hitting 62.1 percent (18-for-29) from the floor and 55.6 percent (five-for-nine) from distance, finishing the showdown shooting 54.4 percent (31-for-57). USI shot 50.8 percent (31-for-61) for the game and was held scoreless beyond the arc until 3:04 left in the game, hitting just one three-pointer on the day.

Parkside outran USI on the court, owning a 10-0 edge in fast break points and owning a 15-5 edge in points off turnovers.

Saturday's victory was the third against a ranked opponent, taking down then No. 12 Lewis University 94-88 on Monday night before edging No. 7 Bellarmine University 76-74 on Thursday. The Rangers return to action on Thursday, heading to the Hoosier State to face Saint Joseph's College at 7:30 p.m.
