SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 20, 2014)-- Colt Grandstaff uncorked a career-high 32 points as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team continued to roll in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, downing East Division nemesis and 23rd-ranked Lewis University 94-88 on Monday night inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
Grandstaff sunk six three-pointers on the night while shooting 11-for-20 from the field, tallying 32 points in 34 minutes of action and helping the Rangers (14-2, 7-0) send the Flyers (13-2, 5-2 GLVC) their first loss this season in regulation.
UW-Parkside got off to a hot start, collecting the opening five points of the game. The Rangers led by six with 12:09 left in the opening stanza before back-to-back Lewis threes knotted the game at 20 with just under 10 minutes left. UW-Parkside quickly extended the advantage up to eight points with 5:27 left in the first half but Lewis crawled back, mounting a 12-2 run to secure its first lead of the game. Mohamed Mohamed free throw before reclaiming the lead off a Grandstaff layup with nine seconds left as the Rangers enjoyed a 39-37 lead at the halftime break.
The Rangers never trailed in the second half, leading by as many as 11 points in the six-point win. Lewis whittled the gap to just three points with 10:03 left and again with 8:44 remaining but the Rangers held at least a two-possession buffer the rest of the way to improve to 7-0 in league action and remain the lone unbeaten in the GLVC.
Jimmy Gavin collected 16 points off the bench, hitting six of his seven shots from the field while Mohamed added 15 points.
Andy Mazurczak finished with 11 points while issuing eight assists while
Jordan Mach and
Zygimantas Riauka each finished with nine points and seven rebounds.
Ryan Jackson paced the Flyers with 20 points while Julian Lewis and Jeff Jarosz added 18 and 17 points, respectively.
UW-Parkside shot 63.3 percent (19-for-30) in the second half, finishing the game shooting 56.9 percent (33-for-58) from the floor, including hitting 45.8 percent (11-for-24) of shots from three-point range.
The Rangers, winners of seven straight, face second-ranked Bellarmine University on Thursday night. Tipoff inside DeSimone Gymnasium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
