SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 18, 2014)-- A luxurious 14-point buffer was nearly erased on Saturday afternoon as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team survived a late scare inside the Statham Center, downing host McKendree University 75-71 to remain unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
Jordan Mach drained a three-pointer with 14:36 remaining in the game, giving the visiting Rangers (13-2, 6-0 GLVC) a 14-point advantage. The Bearcats (6-7, 0-5 GLVC) utilized a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to pull within a possession at 57-54. UW-Parkside countered an extended its lead to nine with 2:54 left off another Mach three but McKendree would not back down, closing with three with 43 seconds left while knifing the Ranger lead to just two points with 13 ticks left after a layup from Mike DiGregorio.
Andy Mazurczak was fouled with nine seconds left and hit a pair of free throws while Mckendree misfired on a pair of shots as the Rangers held on for the four-point win, remaining the only undefeated team in GLVC play.
UW-Parkside claimed the opening four points of the game before McKendree took a 7-6 lead with 15:30 left in the opening half in what turned out to be its lone lead of the day as the Rangers took a 39-27 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Zygimantas Riauka and Mazurczak led the Rangers in scoring, both contributing 16 points. Riauka led the team on the glass with eight rebounds while earning six blocks. Mazurczak dished out nine assists and claimed five rebounds while
Jordan Mach buried five threes to finish with 15 points.
Mohamed Mohamed was the fourth Ranger in double figures, chipping in 11 points.
McKendree's Clinton Happe led all scorers with 20 points while DiGregorio added 17. Matt Holmes chipped in 10 while Arthur Williams led the way on the boards with 14 rebounds off the bench.
The Rangers return to the court on Monday, opening up a three-game homestand against Lewis University. Tipoff inside DeSimone Gymnasium is slated for 7:30 p.m.
