Logo Introduction Video
SOMERS, Wis. (August 9, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside athletic department is excited to release its new logo and graphic identity package. The new graphics will strengthen the UW-Parkside Ranger identity as the squad competes across the Midwest in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and around the nation at NCAA Division II Championship events.
The main logo is accompanied by eight alternative logos, which coupled with the single-color logos for use on light and dark backgrounds, make for 27 different logos in the package. The primary mark (A1, A2, A3 in style guide) features the shield with Ranger Bear and Rangers written inside the shield in hagin caps medium font. Alternative logos include just the bear (B1, B2, B3), a script Rangers logo (C1, C2, C3) and a bear in the shield with no Rangers text (E1, E2, E3). The lock-up vertical (H1, H2, H3) and lock-up horizontal logos (J1, J2, J3) which includes University of Wisconsin Parkside in hagin caps medium will be featured only in print, on the web and on large displays while just the shield (G1, G2, G3) will be used for special events only. The usage of the letter P (D1, D2, D3) and letter P in shield (F1, F2, F3) will be used sparingly as accents to uniforms.
The six-member logo committee engaged in a nearly seven-month process to redesign and update the athletic marks for UW-Parkside. Women's soccer student-athlete and graphic design major Crystal Chalery played a huge role in the redesign, creating several logos before the committee turned the work over to professional designer Chris David Garcia whose experience includes updating the Houston Astros logo last offseason for the franchise's switch to the American League.
The initial design phase included input from several constituents on campus from athletic department personnel and coaches to student-athletes and the University marketing and communications team.
The new athletic logos place a renewed emphasis on the University's traditional colors of green and white. The new mark utilizes three shades of green with dark green (Pantone 5605) serving as an outline and an accent color while the majority of the logo incorporating green (Pantone 349) and medium green (Pantone 3435).
The new logo brings back Ranger Bear as a focal point of the identity package. Ranger Bear has been a staple in previous athletic logos at UW-Parkside before the athletic department moved to a script based logo with claws in recent years. Ranger Bear has been modernized for the new logo and simplified, with bolder more defined lines which will make the logo visible and crisp whether it's in print, on the web, embroidered on a shirt, or screen printed. The bear has additionally been modified to have a more menacing look than the previous incarnations of Ranger Bear.
Also included on the new mark is the Ranger shield. The shield represents the Ranger oath and the athletic department's mission statement which is:
The UW-Parkside Athletics Department is committed to a balanced student-athlete experience that develops future leaders and active community members. As the only NCAA Division II member in the state of Wisconsin, we strive to live the "Life in the Balance" philosophy by promoting academic excellence, athletic success, and community engagement to ensure personal growth and development. We foster an environment that is inclusive and sensitive to the needs of a diverse and multicultural population in order to retain and graduate our student-athletes.
These ideals serve to enhance the educational mission of the University.
The UW-Parkside fall sports seasons begin on Sept. 5 for men's and women's soccer, playing at Wood Road Field while volleyball begins the season the following day in Florida. Men's golf tees off on Sept. 7 against Carthage College while cross country begins on Sept. 14, hosting the Midwest Open.
