UW-Parkside Release on GLVC Major Award Winners
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Mar. 5, 2013)-- The Great Lakes Valley Conference released its All-Conference selections for the 2012-2013 season on Tuesday with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball players
Jeremy Saffold,
Zygimantas Riauka and
Colt Grandstaff earning recognition. Saffold was a unanimous First Team selection while Riauka and Grandstaff secured Second Team honors.
Saffold was a unanimous First Team selection along with earning the
GLVC's Player of the Year award. The senior forward was one of just three players to earn a unanimous selection to the First Team. This is the second All-GLVC honor for Saffold, having earned a spot as a Third Team selection in 2010, becoming the first freshman in program history to earn All-Conference honors. The Hazel Crest, Ill. native led the Rangers and the league in scoring, averaging 19.0 points per game, including an 18.2 ppg average in conference play. The senior ranked second in the league in scoring, 13th in rebounding (5.6 rpg) and ninth in blocks (16) during conference play while finishing in double figures on 23 occasions in 2012-2013.
Riauka earns his first career All-GLVC selection with a spot on the Second Team while also earning a place on the GLVC All-Defensive Team. The sophomore forward is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.5 ppg while leading the team in rebounding, grabbing 5.8 rpg. The Downers Grove, Ill. product collected a team-best 34 blocks on the year and ranked third in the GLVC in blocks per game (1.31). Riauka additionally ranked 10th in the GLVC in rebounding and 15th in field goal percentage (52.7 percent). The forward finished in double figures in 17 games this season, including three double-doubles.
Grandstaff joins Riauka as an All-GLVC Second Team selection. The junior guard has been a force off the bench, averaging 10.5 points per game while dishing out 51 assists on the season. The Apache Junction, Ariz. native finished in double figures in 14 games this season, including 12 occasions during GLVC play, headlined by a 23-point outburst against St. Joe's on Jan. 31. The guard is one of the Rangers' top perimeter threats, draining 32 three-pointers on the year, hitting 39.5 percent of his chances from beyond the arc.
UW-Parkside (19-7, 14-4 GLVC) was picked to finish sixth in the preseason before winning the GLVC East Division title for the first time in program history.
The Rangers face Kentucky Wesleyan College on Thursday at 6 p.m. inside the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. in the quarterfinals of the 2013 Deaconess GLVC Tournament.
