EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Feb. 9, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team secured a season sweep of the University of Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon inside the Physical Activities Center, downing the hosts 58-40 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division clash.
The Rangers (14-7, 8-5 GLVC) dominated the boards, holding a 40-24 rebounding edge while limiting the host Screaming Eagles (16-5, 8-5 GLVC) to shooting just 29.3 percent (12-for-41) for the game to secure the regular season sweep. UW-Parkside knocked off USI 69-53 on Jan. 24 in Somers when the Eagles were ranked No. 23 nationally.
Southern Indiana scored the game's opening bucket before the Rangers tallied the next 10 points with
Sierra West and
Tara Knapstein draining threes on consecutive possessions, giving the visiting squad the 10-2 edge just three minutes into the game.
The Screaming Eagles erased the deficit and tied the contest at 16 off a Mary O'Keefe free throw and again at 18 off an O'Keefe layup with 4:52 remaining in the first half.
Jaleesa Trussell tallied a layup on the next offensive series for the Rangers, sparking an 11-0 run to grab a 29-18 advantage with 46 seconds before halftime. USI sunk a pair of free throws as UW-Parkside enjoyed a 29-20 lead at intermission.
The Rangers maintained at least an eight-point safety net the entire second half en route to the squad's fifth victory in its last six games.
West led the Rangers with 16 points, hitting three of her five shots from the perimeter while Trussell chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Danielle Slivka grabbed a team-high 11 boards and added six points with Knapstein adding eight points.
Southern Indiana was led by O'Keefe, ending the afternoon with 13 points while Stephanie Carpenter added nine.
The Rangers enjoyed a 25-12 edge in points off turnovers while limiting the USI bench to just three points on the afternoon. UW-Parkside hit 50 percent (11-for-22) of its opportunities in the first half while finishing the contest shooting at a 42.6 percent clip (20-for-47). The Rangers held Southern Indiana to shooting just 29.3 percent (12-for-41) from the field, including 26.3 percent (five-for-19) in the second 20 minutes of play.
UW-Parkside returns to the hardwood on Thursday, opening its final homestand of the regular season by hosting McKendree University. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
