ROMEOVILLE, Ill. (Feb. 28, 2013)-- The Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division champion University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad closed out the regular season on Thursday night, suffering a 68-61 setback to host Lewis University inside Neil Carey Arena.
Jeremy Saffold led all scorers with 30 points in a game featuring five ties and four lead changes.
The 13th-ranked Rangers (19-7, 14-4 GLVC) trailed by as many as 15 points before pulling to within a point at 32-31 off a Saffold three-pointer with 16:59 left in the second half.
Kevin Senechalle tied the contest at 33-33 with a layup and the two sides traded buckets before UW-Parkside secured its first lead of the night off a
Nick Neari three with 14:09 left, giving the visitors the 38-37 edge. The Flyers (18-8, 12-6 GLVC) jumped back ahead on next possession before UWP retook the lead with a
Jeremy Saffold dunk.
Lewis responded with a 7-0 run, taking a 46-40 lead with 10:59 left. The Flyers never trailed the rest of the way, earning the season sweep against the GLVC East Division champion Rangers.
Host Lewis tallied the opening five points and led 7-2 before the Rangers fought back, tying the game at nine on a pair of
Jeremy Saffold free throws. The Flyers rattled off the next 11 points with Jeff Jarosz draining a three with 7:56 remaining in the opening half, giving the home side a 20-9 edge. Lewis continued to pull away, securing a 15-point buffer with 5:20 left. UW-Parkside countered with a 9-0 run, capped off by a
Colt Grandstaff three-pointer, cutting the deficit to just six with three minutes left before halftime and went into the break trailing 28-23.
Saffold drained four threes and hit 10 of his 15 attempts from the floor for a game-high 30 points. Neari added nine points and five assists while
Conrad Krutwig grabbed a team-best six rebounds.
Four Flyers registered double figures with David Bryant paving the way with 23 points. Jarosz added 16 while Kyle Nelson and Ryan Jackson added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Rangers return to the hardwood next Thursday for the opening round of the Deaconess GLVC Tournament in Evansville, Ind.
