FLORENCE, Ala. (Feb. 22, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team lifted the lid on its 2013 campaign on Friday, falling 6-0 to defending NAIA National Champion Shorter University before rebounding with a 5-2 victory over host University of North Alabama in day one of the UNA Tournament.

Kristen Little tossed a complete game one-hitter for the 2012 NAIA Champion Hawks (5-1) who tallied three runs in the second inning and two more in the fifth in the shutout win.

Shorter's Sarah Corn opened the scoring with a two RBI double in the second while a Kendall Johnson single brought in Corn for the 3-0 lead. The Hawks tacked on a run in the third courtesy of a sacrifice fly before plating a pair off a home run by Bre Johnson.

Hayley Schneider was tagged with the loss for the Rangers (1-1) yielding six earned runs in five innings of work. Shorter's Little picked up the complete game one-hitter, striking out 12.

Diana Gordon collected the Rangers lone hit, finishing the game one-for-two at the plate.

A four run outburst in the top of the seventh proved more than enough for the Rangers in game two, downing the host Lions (10-2) 5-2.

North Alabama struck first, leading off the bottom of the first inning contest with a solo home run from Harlie Barkley. The Rangers equalized the score in the top of the fourth with an Ashley Nowdomski single up the middle scoring Gordon. Gordon reached base on a single before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.

UNA pulled ahead in the bottom of the frame with a Summer Wilkerson single bringing in Nicki Whitten with two outs.

The UW-Parkside bats came alive in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a Lion error to begin the inning to plate four runs. Kirsten Luevano safely reached base courtesy of a fielding error to start the frame while Nowdomski legged out a bunt single the next at-bat. A Katie Neubauer single cleared the bases before a Kira Cooper base hit and consecutive walks brought in Neubauer. Cooper came home on a wild pitch to conclude the scoring.

Kristin Kleinmeyer tallied the win in the circle, going the distance and striking out five while allowing just one run. Her counterpart Haley Barnette was saddled with the loss, tossing six and 1/3 innings and yielding four runs.

Cooper and Nowdomski led the Ranger offense, both finishing two-for-three while Gordon finished two-for-four.

The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, facing Southwest Baptist University at 1 p.m. before closing the day against Georgia College & State University at 5 p.m.
