SOMERS, Wis. (Feb. 14, 2013)-- A balanced scoring attack and domination in the paint extended the No. 21 University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad's win streak to seven games on Thursday evening, as the Rangers streaked past McKendree University 76-63 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division contest inside DeSimone Gymnasium. Five Rangers finished in double figures, including
Jeremy Saffold who collected his first double-double of the season.
The GLVC East Division leading Rangers (17-5, 12-2 GLVC) accrued the opening six points of the game before the Bearcats (7-17, 1-13 GLVC) struck back with a 17-4 run to seize a 17-10 lead after 11 minutes of action. Clinton Happe was a one man wrecking crew during the run, owning 12 of McKendree's 17 points during the spurt, hitting back-to-back-to-back three pointers. UW-Parkside responded with six straight from
Andy Mazurczak before reclaiming the lead with 1:36 left before halftime on a
Conrad Krutwig jumper to cap off a 7-0 Ranger run. McKendree hit a pair of free throws to regain the lead with 66 seconds left but the Rangers pulled in front for good just seven seconds later courtesy of a
Kevin Senechalle layup. UW-Parkside enjoyed a 28-24 advantage at the break after
Colt Grandstaff drained a three-pointer just past midcourt as time expired.
McKendree pulled to within a possession early in the second half before UWP tallied eight straight to enjoy a 37-26 lead with 16:29 remaining. The pesky Bearcats utilized a pair of threes from Matt Murphy to mount an 8-0 run in a 46 second span to pull with three before the Rangers pulled away, building a lead as big as 20 points en route to the 13-point victory.
Saffold registered his first double-double of the season, posting a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds while Krutwig added 13 points and seven rebounds.
Zygimantas Riauka and
Colt Grandstaff both added a dozen points while Mazurczak was the fifth Ranger in double figures with 10 points.
Happe paced McKendree with a game-high 25 points while John Steppe added 13 points and 11 boards.
UW-Parkside shot a red-hot 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from the floor in the second half, closing the game hitting 54.2 percent (32-for-59) from the field. McKendree shot a dismal 22.2 percent (six-for-27) from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play and ended the contest shooting at a 38.2 percent (21-for-55) clip. The Rangers enjoyed a 46-18 edge in the paint, including a 22-2 edge in the opening half while owning a 19-4 edge in points off turnovers.
The Rangers look to extend their win streak on Saturday, welcoming No. 13 Bellarmine University to DeSimone Gymnasium for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
