HOUGHTON, Mich. (Dec. 21, 2013)-- Unable to cool off a red-hot shooting squad, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad closed out its non-conference slate with an 83-79 setback to host Michigan Tech University on Saturday inside SDC Gymnasium.
Michigan Tech (6-2) finished the contest shooting 66.7 percent from beyond the arc, canning 14 three-pointers on the afternoon.
The host Huskies tallied seven of the first nine points and quickly built a 15-6 edge with 12:28 left in the opening stanza. Michigan Tech continued to scorch the nets, riding a 13-2 surge to build a 21-point buffer with 6:49 left in the first half. The hosts edge grew to as many as 23 points before the Rangers (7-2) battled back to knife the gap to just 11 at the halftime intermission, trailing 40-29 after
Zygimantas Riauka converted a layup as time expired.
An
Andy Mazurczak layup with 12 minutes left, reduced the gap to single digits for the first time since midway through the opening half. A 6-0 spurt closed the Green and White to within five with just over 10 minutes left before pulling within a possession at 72-69 courtesy of a
Jimmy Gavin layup with 3:05 left. Back-to-back MTU threes surged the Huskies' lead back to seven and the home side hit the necessary free throws down the stretch to survive and claim the four-point win.
Mazurczak ended the game with a season-high 28 points, shooting 11-for-17 from the field while collecting eight boards. Riauka tallied his third double-double of the season, finishing with 19 points and a team-high 11 rebounds while
Jordan Mach and
Jimmy Gavin tallied 16 and 11 points, respectively.
Austin Armga, the nation's second leading scorer, and Jason Hawke led the Huskies, each dropping 19 points. Ben Stelzer added 18 while Jordan Chartier chipped in 12.
UW-Parkside crushed Tech in the paint, owning a 42-16 edge but was outgunned 35-0 in bench points.
The Rangers return to action on Friday, Jan. 3, hosting Quincy University at 7:30 p.m. to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
