SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 30, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad continued its dominance against in-state competition, disposing defending NAIA Division II National Champion Cardinal Stritch University 77-64 on Saturday afternoon inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (6-1) utilized an 18-0 run midway through the first half and led the rest of the way in the 13-point victory.
Mohamed Mohamed opened the scoring with a trey as host UW-Parkside staked a 7-5 lead with 15:59 remaining in the opening half. The Wolves (7-2) collected the next eight points, claiming a 13-7 advantage with 12:51 left to play. The Rangers responded with a surge of their own, recording the next 18 points to grab a 25-13 lead with just under nine minutes left in the half. A Mohamed steal and fast break dunk gave the Rangers their first double digit advantage of the day before an
Andis Malahovskis layup gave the home side the 12-point lead.
UW-Parkside led by as many as 15 points in the opening frame but the pesky Stritch squad whittled the deficit to just six at the break as the Green and White took a 39-33 lead into intermission.
A Garrett Borgrud layup brought the Wolves within two points with 12:23 left but the Rangers responded with a 12-4 spurt to swell the lead back to double digits with 8:08 left in the contest. Cardinal Stritch pulled within six with 1:50 left before the Rangers closed the game on a 10-3 run with eight of the points coming from the charity stripe.
Colt Grandstaff led the Rangers with 16 points and seven assists, getting half of his offensive output at the free throw line.
Jimmy Gavin came off the bench and added 15 points while
Andy Mazurczak and
Jordan Mach added 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Zygimantas Riauka was the fifth Ranger in double figures, collecting 10 points while Mohamed added eight.
Derek Semenas led the Wolves with 18 points while Borgrud added 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
UW-Parkside finished the contest shooting 53.3 percent (24-for-45) from the field, including a blazing 68.8 percent (11-for-16) in the second half. The Rangers converted 53.8 percent (seven-for-13) of their shots from beyond the arc and held a 32-17 advantage in points off turnovers. Cardinal Stritch controlled the glass, owning a 33-24 rebounding edge, including 14 offensive boards.
UW-P has now won 17 of its last 19 games against in-state opponents and owns a 106-18 all-time record against Wisconsin private colleges and universities.
The Rangers return to the court on Saturday at 2 p.m., heading to Division I Chicago State University for an exhibition.
