SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 26, 2013)-- A nearly flawless opening half powered the homestanding University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team to an 83-70 non-conference victory over the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday night inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (5-1) owned a 16-point lead at the halftime intermission, shooting 66.7 percent (eight-for-12) from three-point range while committing just one turnover.
UW-Parkside's
Jordan Mach drained a trey to open the contest as the lead exchanged hands eight times in the opening eight minutes. A Reece Zoelle three gave the visiting Bulldogs (2-2) the 14-13 lead with 12:10 left in the opening frame in what turned out to be UMD's final lead of the night. The Green and White tallied the next 16 points, enjoying a 15-point buffer with 8:30 left as back-to-back threes from Mach and
Jimmy Gavin capped off the scoring binge. UW-P enjoyed a double digit buffer the rest of the half, enjoying a 47-31 lead at the break after
Andy Mazurczak hit a jumper as time expired.
The Rangers led by as many as 20-points in the second half. The Bulldogs knifed the Ranger lead to just 10 on two occasions, first with 2:58 left and again with 90 seconds left but were unable to come any closer.
Zygimantas Riauka led the way for the Rangers, dropping a team-high 21 points while grabbing a game-high eight boards. The junior forward had a full night on the stat sheet, also dishing out four assists along with a pair of blocks and a steal. Mach hit four three-pointers on the day, collecting 18 points while Mazurczak and
Colt Grandstaff each tallied 13 points. Mazurczak dished out six assists while Gavin hit three shots from distance, coming off the bench and adding 12 points for the Ranger cause.
Minnesota-Duluth's Zoelle led all scorers with 26 points while Jordan Reetz and Peter Crawford added 17 and 14 points, respectively. Crawford additionally distributed a game-high eight assists.
The Rangers ended the game shooting 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the floor while limiting the Bulldogs to just 37.5 percent (24-for-64). UW-P enjoyed a 34-22 edge in the paint and tied for a season-low with nine turnovers.
UW-Parkside concludes its five-game home stretch on Saturday, welcoming defending NAIA Division II National Champion Cardinal Stritch University to DeSimone Gymnasium. Tipoff against the Wolves is slated for 3 p.m.
