SAINT PAUL, Minn. (Nov. 15, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball squad suffered its first setback of the season on Friday night, falling 71-68 to Minnesota State University-Moorhead in the opening game of the Radisson Hotel Roseville Classic inside the Gangelhoff Center.
The Rangers (2-1) trailed by as many as 11 points before crawling back to tie the contest. MSUM's Morgan Banasik tallied a fast break layup with 9:59 left in the second half, giving the Dragons (2-0) the 59-48 lead. UW-Parkside quickly knifed into the deficit with
Kristin Conniff converting an old fashioned three-point play, converting a layup and a free throw before
Tara Knapstein drained a three-pointer with 8:20 remaining to close the gap to 59-54.
MSU-Moorhead built its advantage back up to seven points with two minutes remaining before back-to-back three-pointers from Conniff pulled the Rangers within a point at 69-68 with 41 seconds left. A Knapstein steal with 13 ticks left gave UW-P a shot to reclaim its first lead since early in the first half but the Rangers' misfired on a three and were forced to foul after the Dragons came up with the rebound. MSUM sunk a pair of free throws with four seconds left and a desperation three fell short for UW-P, sending the Rangers their first defeat of the year.
The opening four minutes of play featured five lead changes as the two squads traded jabs. The contest was tied at 15-15 before the Dragons outscored the Rangers by an 18-9 margin to stake a 33-24 lead with just under five minutes left in the opening half. MSU-Moorhead enjoyed a 40-32 lead at intermission, shooting a red-hot 60 percent (six-for-10) from three-point range.
Danielle Slivka led all scorers with 18 points, going seven-for-nine from the floor.
Gaby Bronson added 17 points and a game-high six assists while Conniff came off the bench and added nine points.
Four Dragons registered in double figures with Morgan Zabel paving the way with 16 points.Meghan Roehrich added 15 while Morgan Banasik and Megan Strese chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively.
The Rangers dominated the paint, owning a 42-20 edge in points in the paint but was outgunned on the perimeter, shooting just 25 percent (four-for-16) from three-point range while the Dragons shot 47.1 percent (eight-for-17) from distance.
UW-Parkside concludes the tournament tomorrow, facing host and ninth-ranked Concordia University at 5 p.m.
