SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Jan. 5, 2013)-- A
Conrad Krutwig three with seven seconds left in overtime tipped the scales back in favor of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team en route to a 90-88 upset victory over No. 14 Drury University on Saturday afternoon inside O'Reilly Family Event Center. The Rangers led by as many as 20 points before needing the final seven points of regulation to force overtime in a wild Great Lakes Valley Conference clash that featured eight lead changes and five ties.
The 14th-ranked Panthers (8-3, 2-1 GLVC) raced to an early lead in overtime before a
Jeremy Saffold three-pointer with 2:23 remaining knotted the score at 86-86. A Brandon Lockhart layup with 37 ticks left put the hosts back on top before Krutwig buried a clutch three, his sixth of the contest, with seven seconds left to put the visiting Rangers (7-3, 2-0 GLVC) back on top. Krutwig tacked on a free throw with two seconds left and a Drury three at the buzzer fell shy, giving UWP its second conference win in as many tries.
The Rangers enjoyed an 18-point buffer at the half, shooting 62.1 percent (18-for-29) from the field while limiting host Drury to shooting at just 37.5 percent (nine-for-24). The 14th-ranked Panthers owned a 12-10 advantage after five minutes of play before UW-Parkside mounted a 15-3 run to reclaim the lead. UWP's margin continued to balloon later in the opening stanza as an 11-0 run gave the Rangers a 43-24 edge with just over two minutes left. Krutwig was red hot from the perimeter, draining three buckets from beyond the arc during the spurt, as the Rangers took a 46-28 lead into the locker room at intermission.
An
Andy Mazurczak layup to begin the second half gave the Rangers their biggest lead of the day at 48-28 before the Panthers started crawling back, utilizing a 17-2 spurt to whittle the Ranger lead to a modest five points with 12:23 remaining.
Drury continued to cut into the UWP advantage, pulling within a bucket at 52-50 with just over 11 minutes left. UW-Parkside responded with a 9-2 surge, capped off by a Krutwig trey with less than nine minutes remaining.
The Panthers jumped back in front with a 14-2 run giving the home side the 79-72 lead with 2:43 left in regulation before UW-Parkside closed the second 20 minutes of play on a 7-0 run to force overtime.
Nick Neari capped the rally with a layup with 41 seconds left.
Three Rangers ended the game in double figures with
Jeremy Saffold paving the way with 27 points and nine rebounds. Krutwig drained six threes and finished nine-for-14 from the floor, pouring on a season-high 25 points along with six boards.
Zygimantas Riauka tallied 11 points while
Colt Grandstaff added nine points. Neari led the Rangers with eight assists along with four points.
Alex Hall paced Drury with 23 points while Brandon Lockhart added 15. Lonnie Boga chipped in 13 points with Kameron Bundy and Drake Patterson both contributing 10 points.
The Rangers enjoyed their best shooting night of the season, hitting 62.7 percent (32-for-51) of their shots including 56.3 percent (nine-for-16) from beyond the arc. UWP's hot shooting helped nullify the season-high 28 turnovers while holding a 36-22 edge in points in the paint.
UW-Parkside returns to the hardwood on Thursday, hosting Rockhurst University at 7:30 p.m. inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
