ROLLA, Mo. (Jan. 3, 2013)-- A scoring surge midway through the contest turned a tenuous lead into a blowout as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball squad opened up its Great Lakes Valley Conference slate in dominating fashion, downing host Missouri S&T University 72-50 on Thursday night at Billy Key Court.

"This was our best all around effort of the year. We had so many guys on the floor going after loose balls," said head coach Luke Reigel. "We challenged our seniors to not only be lightning rods for our team offensively but to also be better defensively and that's what I was most pleased about."

The host Miners (4-5, 0-2 GLVC) roared out to an early 17-8 lead with 12:51 remaining in the opening half before the Rangers (6-3, 1-0 GLVC) responded, chipping away at the lead and utilizing a 13-0 run over a four-minute stretch to grab a 28-22 lead. An Andy Mazurczak layup with 7:38 left gave UW-Parkside its first lead of the night at 24-22. S&T answered the call, scoring the next seven points to reclaim the lead at 31-30 with 2:21 left.

A Zygimantas Riauka layup tipped the scales back in favor of the Rangers as the visiting squad enjoyed a 34-31 lead at the halftime break. Riauka's bucket sparked a 17-2 Ranger run, turning a one-point deficit into a 47-33 lead with 14:43 left in the second half. UW-Parkside maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way en route to the 22-point victory.

Jeremy Saffold led all scorers with 20 points, finishing the night nine-for-17 from the floor. Conrad Krutwig added 10 points while Riauka chipped in nine points along with five assists and four blocks.

Nusrath Khan led S&T with 14 points while Mudi Eruteya netted a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

UW-Parkside shot 52.5 percent (31-for-59) from the field while limiting Missouri S&T to shooting just 35.6 percent (16-for-45) from the floor. The Rangers forced 20 turnovers while owning a 22-6 edge in bench points.

The 22-point win is the Rangers' largest margin of victory in a GLVC game since drubbing Quincy University 92-68 on Feb. 7, 2008.

The Rangers continue their GLVC road trip on Saturday, squaring off against 14th-ranked Drury University with tip-off slated for 3:15 p.m.
