SOMERS, Wis. (Jan. 21, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team was unable to bottle up Ryan Jackson on Monday night inside DeSimone Gymnasium as the sophomore guard piled on 32 points to power Lewis University past the Rangers 77-74 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division showdown.
Jeremy Saffold tallied 22 points to assist the Rangers' cause but the homestanding squad was unable to stymie Jackson who hit 10 of his 13 attempts from the field while sinking all 10 free throws in his career-high 32-point outburst.
The hotly contested affair came down to the wire with UW-Parkside trailing by three with 37 seconds left.
Colt Grandstaff drew a foul while attempting a shot from beyond the arc but only converted two of his three shots from the charity stripe forcing the Rangers to foul Jackson with 28 ticks left. Jackson drained both opportunities and the Rangers misfired on a pair of shots in the waning moments as Lewis held on for the 77-74 victory.
UW-Parkside stormed out to an early 12-2 lead as
Conrad Krutwig sunk a pair of threes. Lewis battled back eventually tying the game at 27-27 with 5:19 remaining in the first half. UWP extended its edge back up to five points with 3:36 left off a Saffold trey but the Flyers wouldn't back down, tying the game at 35 before the Rangers took a 38-37 lead into halftime.
The Rangers increased their advantage to eight points with 15:09 left in the second half after Saffold converted a three the old fashioned way, sinking a layup and banging home a free throw for the 50-42 lead. Lewis quickly countered, utilizing a 10-2 spurt to knot the score at 52 with 12:25 left in the contest.
The teams traded jabs until the Flyers tallied six straight points to take their largest lead of the night with 6:47 remaining. The Rangers battled back, tying the score at 66 with 4:10 remaining on a pair of Grandstaff free throws, but could not break through, converting just two field goals over the final five minutes of play in the heartbreaking three-point defeat.
Saffold led the Rangers with 22 points and five rebounds, finishing eight-for-18 from the floor while Krutwig canned four threes on the night, chipping in 16 points. Grandstaff provided a spark off the bench with 10 points and five boards while
Andy Mazurczak dished out five assists.
David Bryant and Gabe Williams joined Jackson in double figures for the Rangers. Bryant added 16 points while Williams chipped in 10 points.
UW-Parkside finished the game shooting 48.1 percent (25-for-52) while Lewis shot 56 percent (28-for-50) from the field, including hitting 70 percent (14-for-20) of its chances in the second half. The Rangers owned a 24-18 edge in the paint and a 13-3 advantage in second chance points while outrebounding the visitors 30-24.
The Rangers continue their homestand on Thursday, welcoming nationally-ranked University of Southern Indiana to DeSimone Gymnasium for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
