SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 9, 2012)-- Two goals over a four-minute stretch propelled the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to its second win over a regionally-ranked squad, downing Drury University 2-1 on Sunday in a Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer match at Wood Road Field.
The Rangers (3-0-1, 2-0 GLVC), ranked eighth in the Midwest Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, wrap up their season-opening homestand undefeated after taking down the No. 4 ranked Panthers (2-2, 0-2 GLVC).
UW-Parkside's
Megan Owens opened the scoring in the 67th minute, scoring after the Panther keeper misjudged a free kick taken by
Madison Pickett. The host Rangers doubled their advantage just four minutes later with
Emily Konior converting a penalty kick in the 71st minute after
Alex Johnson was taken down inside the box.
Drury attempted a late rally, notching a goal in the 87th minute by Emma Huggett but the UW-Parkside defense clamped down the final three minutes of play to hold on to the win and remain unbeaten on the season.
The Rangers dominated play for a majority of the game as the defense didn't yield a shot on goal until the 75th minute, ending the game with a 7-3 edge on shots on goal.
Michelle Girard logged all 90 minutes in goal for the second straight contest, racking up a pair of saves to earn the victory while Drury's Kelsey Vaught notched five saves in the losing effort.
UWP hits the road for the first time this season, taking on Rockhurst University at 5 p.m. on Friday to open a four-game road trip.
