SOMERS, Wis. (Dec. 1, 2012)-- 27 points from
Jeremy Saffold was not enough as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's basketball team fell 80-72 to non-conference foe Cedarville University on Saturday afternoon inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Rangers (3-2) raced out to an early advantage with
Conrad Krutwig tallying seven of the squad's first nine points as the home side built a 15-8 lead just over five minutes into the contest. Back-to-back treys by the Yellow Jackets (3-5) closed the margin to just a point in a first half that witnessed three lead changes and six ties. Cedarville's Brian Grant hit a jumper with 3:12 remaining in the opening half, to give the visitors a 34-32 lead. The Yellowjackets would not relinquish the lead the rest of the day, taking a 41-36 lead into the halftime break.
Consecutive three-pointers from Daniel Hickman and Jason Cuffee mushroomed Cedarville's lead to game-high 14 points with 13:27 remaining in the second half. UW-Parkside didn't back down, as a Saffold three pulled the Rangers to within four points with 7:42 remaining. A three and a layup and a free throw pushed the Yellow Jacket lead back up into double digits. UWP chipped away and pulled to within four again at 3:31 off a Saffold jumper before jumping back up to a 10-point deficit with 2:05 remaining.
The Rangers mounted a final charge with back-to-back threes from
Conrad Krutwig and
Nick Neari closed the gap back to four at 73-69 with 46 seconds left but the Jackets converted all five of their free throws down the stretch to survive with the eight-point win.
Saffold finished nine-for-18 from the floor with 27 points to lead all scorers. It is the senior's fourth game this season scoring more than 20 points and fifth game in double figures. Krutwig added 16 points and five rebounds, sinking four threes on the afternoon while
Zygimantas Riauka chipped in 11 points.
Bryant Smith distributed a game-high six assists.
Zimmy Nwogbo paced Cedarville, the 2012 National Christian College Athletic Association National Champions, with 18 points and nine rebounds. Brian Hecker tallied 15 points and Zach Brown added 13.
Both team's saw success from beyond the arc, UW-Parkside shot 40.0 percent on the day (10-for-25) while Ceadrville hit on 58.8 percent (10-for-17) of its attempts, including 63.6 percent (seven-for-11) in the opening frame.
The Rangers continue their homestand on Tuesday, welcoming Northland International University to DeSimone Gymnasium with tipoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
