SOMERS, Wis. (Nov. 10, 2012)-- Aggressive defense yielded 37 points off turnovers as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball team lifted the curtain on the 2012-2013 regular season on Saturday afternoon, dominating Eureka College, 85-50, inside DeSimone Gymnasium.
Eureka seized its lone lead of the afternoon at 2-1 off a bucket from Caty Eeten before the Rangers (1-0) rattled off 18 straight while generating 10 turnovers to take control of the game. UW-Parkside's advantage mushroomed to 33 points with 3:34 remaining in the opening frame off a
Sierra West layup before enjoying a comfortable 49-22 lead at the halftime intermission.
"We're going to go through a learning process and it's going to take some time. I do think our kids got off to a good start, specifically on defense and in transition," said head coach Jenny Knight-Kenesie who is now 11-0 in home openers. "It was important for us to get after it defensively to allow us some easy baskets and really build up that confidence."
The Rangers maintained at least a 24-point buffer in the second 20 minutes of action en route to the 35-point blowout victory over the Division III Red Devils.
"Overall we started out really strong and a lot of it came from the extra effort, whether on defense or pushing in transition and that's definitely a positive."
Gaby Bronson led UW-Parkside with a game-high 19 points, one of five Rangers ended the afternoon in double figures. West tallied 11 points at the break, finishing the game with 13 along with a game-high seven assists and five steals.
Danielle Slivka chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and four assists while
Jenna Endisch tallied 11 points with six boards.
Brittney Fair was the fifth Ranger in double figures, coming off the bench and pouring on 10 points along with four steals.
Kelsey Shoemake posted a double-double for the Red Devils, scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Andrea Leitz added 11 points while Jaylynn Stewart chipped in 10. Despite being the regular season opener for UW-Parkside, the game was considered an exhibition contest for Eureka.
UWP enjoyed a 37-15 edge in points off turnovers while holding a 22-4 advantage in fast break points.
The Rangers embark on their first road trip of the regular season on Tuesday, heading west to Fayette, Iowa to face Upper Iowa University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
