Box Score

Indianapolis, Ind.- The UW-Parkside men's basketball team used a 16-5 run late in the second half to get within striking distance before eventually falling to 21st-ranked Indianapolis, 86-73 at Nicoson Hall in Indiana. Jeremy Saffold led the Rangers with 23 points including five, three-pointers.

Parkside outscored the Greyhounds in the paint, 30-28 and 17-11 in second chance points but the hosts made good on 50.8% of their shots from the field to improve to 8-3 in the league. Indianapolis was 12-for-22 from  three-point line (54.5%) including 8-for-13 (61.5%) in the decisive first half.

“Early I thought they took a lot of shots we wanted them to take,” said head coach Luke Reigel. “On a lot of those we had a hand right in their face … give them credit they knocked them down.”

Saffold was joined in double figures by Colt Grandstaff who finished with a career-high 18 points on 6-for-11 from the field. Steve Jaskulske also reached double digits with 11. Conrad Krutwig recorded a game-high eight rebounds.

Adrian Moss was high-scorer for Indianapolis with 28 points to go with seven assists. Reece Cheatham also had a big day with 26 points going 5-for-6 from three.

Facing their biggest deficit of the day with just under ten minutes to go, the Rangers began a furious comeback. Nick Neari started it with a lay-up in front of a basket by Grandstaff. Krutwig followed with a free throw for five straight points.

Grandstaff answered a Cheatham triple with a long ball of his own. Jaskulske came right back with a three-point play to keep the run going.

Then after a pair of Greyhound free throws it was Grandstaff with five straight points, including another three, and the score was 78-68 with 4:35 left. The Rangers came back down and had a look at a three but couldn't get it to go.

Moss countered with a three and the Rangers were unable to get under a dozen the rest of the way.

“I'm proud of our guys,” said Reigel. “We battled. We had a three that would have cut it to seven and it just didn't fall."

Grandstaff's jumper with 6:37 left in the first half cut what was once a 10-point Indianapolis lead down to five. The Greyhounds knocked down three, three-pointers in the final two minutes to spur an 11-3 run and take a 52-36 lead into the break.

For the game, the battle of the boards was even with each team grabbing 36. Turnovers were virtually even as well, 18-17 in favor of the Greyhounds. Those were converted into 30 points for the home team compared to 23 for the Rangers.

Parkside is back in action on Thursday when they welcome number one ranked Bellarmine to town. Game time at the DeSimone Gymnasium is set for 7:30 p.m.

“We've just got to keep battling,” said Reigel. “Our kids our working hard. We'll be ready to go when we get home next weekend.”
