The Saint Joseph's College Pumas went on a 19-3 run midway through the second half to help earn a 94-85 victory over the Rangers on Thursday night at the DeSimone Gymnasium. Saint Joseph's shot 77.8% in a 57-point second half (21-for-27) to get the win.
The loss drops the Rangers to 8-10 overall (1-9 GLVC) while the Pumas improved to 7-11 (2-8 GLVC).
Jeremy Saffold led UW-Parkside with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double. Dayvon Sloan was the top performer for the Pumas with 19 points, eight assists, and five rebounds.
The teams went back-and-forth for the first 20 minutes exchanging the lead seven times with the score also being tied on seven occasions. Saint Joe's grabbed its biggest lead of the half at 23-17 but
Colt Grandstaff came back with a three-pointer and a three-point play to tie the game up.
The Pumas jumped back out in front by five with 5:13 left in the period but a three by
Ryan Callozzo and a jumper by
Nick Neari tied it again.
Steve Jaskulske completed the 6-0 spurt with a free throw to give the Rangers the lead.
A Puma free throw with just over a minute to go sent the teams to the locker room tied at 37.
The Rangers used an 8-1 surge early in the second half to take their biggest lead of the game. Back-to-back threes by Saffold and
Leneal Harris made it 51-44 with just over 16 minutes left in regulation.
The lead was still seven a few minutes later but that's when the Pumas began their charge. A pair of Ranger turnovers sparked the visitors' comeback.
Grandstaff hit a three to put Parkside up 58-52, seemingly still in good shape. But over the next four minutes the Rangers went 1-for-8 from the floor and saw the Pumas pounce by knocking down eight straight field goals.
The Rangers were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way in defeat.
The Pumas outscored the Rangers in the paint, 48-30 and 38-21 on the bench. Parkside did force 15 turnovers while only giving it up 11 times but the resulting points were even at 14.
Harris finished with 19 points to go with four assists. Grandstaff and Jaskulske each had 11 points.
Parkside will be back on the road Saturday for a GLVC contest against Indianapolis. Game time against the 21
st-ranked Greyhounds is scheduled for 2:15 p.m.
