For the first time in school history the UW-Parkside men's cross country claimed the Midwest Open on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. The Rangers edged out Saint Joseph's College, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Oshkosh to earn the title. Just six places separated the top four teams.
Evan Lewandowski finished second for Parkside while
Tom Hedman was fifth and
Ron Hedman eighth.
“I thought Even was great,” said head coach
Micah VanDenend. “He ran a PR out here in the heat to start the year. (Evan) really is a product of putting in the work, training consistently over the last year, and putting in the time over the summer. He had a great spring last year so I think he had some pretty big goals coming into the season and he showed that he's earned that success. It's only going to get better for him.”
The Rangers, who were ranked 25
th in the country in the preseason coaches' poll, did not run their best race on Saturday. Despite the victory, VanDenend felt like there was much room for improvement for his team which carries high expectations into this season.
“For the rest of the group I think today was a wake-up call,” commented VanDenend. “We have some work to do but we're only just getting going. I certainly think we have the people in our program to be the team we expect to be when it matters at the end of the season … but we've definitely got to get after it and get better.”
The Rangers will take next weekend off of competition before getting back on the course on Sept. 24. Parkside will travel to St. Paul, Minn. for the University of Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational.
