The UW-Parkside women's soccer team fell short in its attempt to win back-to-back Great Lakes Valley Conference titles. Bellarmine scored just 34 seconds into overtime to knock off the Rangers by the score of 2-1 in Highland Heights, Ky. The team will now wait for Monday night's NCAA Tournament Selection Show to learn its postseason fate.
Bellarmine advances to Sunday's championship match against fourth-seeded Quincy who advanced on penalty kicks against Northern Kentucky earlier in the day. The Rangers fall to 12-3-2 on the season but appear to be in very comfortable shape in terms of at-large positioning.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half with just three shots combined and one save a piece. Things picked up in the second half however to lead to the dramatic finish.
The Knights got on the board in the 58th minute on an unassisted goal by Chelsea McCarty. It was McCarty's third goal and one of only two shots for Bellarmine in the half.
Parkside came back quickly as
Natalie Brown notched the tying goal in the 65th minute. She took a pass from
Shannon Becker and headed it in for her fifth goal of the season. It was Becker's 14th assist of the year giving her a school record 46 for her career.
Just over a minute later the Rangers looked to take the lead when
Stephanie Barsuli got free following a corner kick. But a Knights' defender came in to help the goalie and earn a save. Lauki'I Cheng's rebound was stopped by keeper Amy Kunowski and the match remained tied.
Parkside put a few more shots on Kunowski in the half, as she finished with five total saved, and pushed the game to overtime.
In the extra period it was McCarty again who cashed in, this time with the golden goal. McKenzie Combs found her just 34 seconds in and she ended the match.
Bellarmine was able to avenge a 1-0 loss to the Rangers earlier this season in Louisville. The two ranked teams could potentially meet for a third time next weekend in the NCAA Regional.
The Rangers will now be tuning in on Monday evening for the NCAA.com Selection Show to learn where they'll be headed for next week's NCAA Tournament. The show can be seen live online at 6:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
