Shannon Becker became the all-time leading goal scorer in UW-Parkside women's soccer history with her 40th career goal in the Rangers 4-0 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan. The De Pere, WI native got into the clear in the game's 72nd minute and beat the keeper for the record breaking goal.
"Shannon has been one of the most dangerous forwards to ever play for our program," said head coach
Troy Fabiano. "She has put a great amount of time in on and off thet field to get better. We're very proud of her accomplishment."
Becker surpassed the 39th career goals scored by Bryanna Jurvis in her Ranger career. Becker added an assist on the first goal as she nears Allison Wild's career mark. Becker has the most points in Parkside history with 121.
The Rangers put the match away early by dominating the first half with three goals. Parkside outshot KWC 20-3 in the period and didn't give them much room to breathe.
Stephanie Barsuli got them on the board in the 29th minute with her sixth goal of the year. Becker sent a pass to the left side to
Kristen Benson who laid a beautiful cross over to Barsuli who scored with a header.
They added to the lead three minutes later after earning a corner kick.
Madison Pickett took the boot and
Natalie Brown was able to finish from the left side. Brown's third goal of the season made it 2-0.
The Rangers wrapped up the half with a final goal as
Kelsey Armour scored the first of her career. She got a lead pass from
Jasmine Espino on the right wing and was able to beat the keeper, 39:54 into the game.
Kentucky Wesleyan increased their defensive pressure in the second half and made it tougher on the Rangers to get good looks. They were able to back Parkside up a bit and limit some of their opportunities until later in the half.
The final goal though was the record-breaker by Becker. It was unassisted as she took a lead pass ahead of the defenders back had to make a few nifty moves around the recovering Panthers. She made her final move and wrapped one into the net for a 4-0 lead.
Parkside finished the match outshooting KWC 15-5 for the half and 35-8 for the game.
Cassie Glodowski got the victory in net with two saves through the first 70-plus minutes.
Michelle Girard finished up the shut out without facing a shot on goal.
The Rangers improved to 7-2-0 in the GLVC. Thanks to Bellarmine's loss at Indianapolis, Parkside is now tied with the Knights for third place, a game back of Northern Kentucky and Quincy. The team will play its second of four straight at home on Sunday. They will take on Southern Indiana at 12:00 p.m. at Wood Road Field.
