Ranger nine swept at NKU

Game 1     Game 2     Game 3     Game 4

The Ranger baseball team bowed to homestanding Northern Kentucky in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Highland Heights, 11-7 and 6-1. On Sunday, the Norse ruled again, beating UW-Parkside 10-4 and 12-6.

In the opening game of the series, the Rangers got off to a good early start, leading 3-0 after an inning-and-a-half. The Norse, however, put up four crooked numbers the rest of the way, including a three-spot in the bottom of the eighth, pulling away from a slim 8-7 advantage.

Alex Zarek took the pitching loss. He gave up six earned runs in five-and-two-thirds innings. Jon Kleinmeyer was tagged for four earned runs in relief.

Northern Kentucky turned six double plays in the opener and out-hit their guests, 13-12.

In Saturday's second game, Jack Olson gave up five runs in a distance performance. The Norse out-hit the Rangers, 10-6.

Kirk Haviland cranked a three-run homer in the top of the second inning in Sunday's first game to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead. The Norse plated four in the home half of the third to take the lead for good.

Chris Wolcott gave up seven earned runs in three-and-two-thirds innings in taking the loss. Kleinmeyer tossed a scoreless inning in the sixth. The Rangers were out-hit, 11-6.

In the final game of the series, Josh Hudnut was touched up for 10 earned runs and was relieved in the sixth inning. Michael Bjerke hurled a scoreless inning in relief.

At the plate, John Bishop had the hat trick in hits.

The Rangers are now 10-25 overall and 5-15 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Northern Kentucky moved to a stellar 28-11 overall and 15-5 in league play.

UW-Parkside is scheduled to play a non-conference game at Upper Iowa Tuesday, April 13. The team will return to Oberbruner Field to resume conference action when it hosts Kentucky Wesleyan in a four-game series over the weekend. There will be doubleheaders starting at noon both Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18. The Panthers are currently 15-22 overall and 7-12 in the GLVC.
