UWP moves to 8-2 with win at Saginaw

The UW-Parkside women's basketball team picked up a non-conference win in Saginaw, Michigan, Wednesday night. The Rangers defeated homestanding Saginaw Valley State, 59-52.

            The win lifts the Rangers' overall record to 8-2. The Cardinals dropped to 3-8.

            Parkside was up, 30-23 at halftime, and never relinquished its lead in the second half.

               UW-Parkside was 4-4 at the free throw line in the final 30 seconds, pulling away from what was a one-possession game. Kaitlyn Bettiga and Jaleesa Trussell each knocked down a pair from the charity stripe to put the game away.

            Kristen Ruchti and Cheryl Leyns each had big games off the bench for the Rangers. Ruchti tallied a career-high 16 points, while Leyns barely missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. A total of 35 of the Rangers' 59 points came from the bench.

            The Rangers shot 42 percent from the floor for the game. UWP showed why it is one of the better defensive teams in the region, limiting the Cardinals to just a 35 percent success ratio from the floor.

            Parkside out-rebounded its hosts, 41-36.

            The Rangers return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday, Jan. 2. The team will host Kentucky Wesleyan College in the DeSimone Gymnasium, beginning at 1:00 p.m. In an unusual stretch, the Rangers will play at home every other day during the week, taking on Bellarmine Tuesday, Jan. 4 (5:30 p.m.), Saint Joseph's Thursday, Jan. 6, (5:30 p.m.) and Illinois-Springfield Sunday, Jan. 8 (1:00 p.m.).
