Hot-shooting UMSL tops UWP

Box Score

The UW-Parkside men's basketball team was within striking distance of host Missouri-St. Louis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Thursday night. The visitors could not get any closer than four points in the second half, were forced to play foul and chase in the final stages, and were left with an 85-71 setback.

Parkside fell to 1-4 overall. Missouri-St. Louis is off to a solid start at 4-1.

The Rangers, who defeated UMSL in the first round of the GLVC tournament last season, shot 50 percent in the second half. A hot-handed Triton club was on fire, making good on a whopping 70 percent of their second half attempts.

Gerald Fulton of Missouri-St. Louis scored 26 of his 32 points in the second half. He led all scorers in the game.

Leneal Harris was Parkside's high man in the scorebook with 21 points. Jordan Mach drained four three-pointers to help account for his 16 points. Jeremy Saffold added 11.

The Rangers had the better of the boards, out-rebounding their foes by a 29-26 count. Points off of turnovers were costly, with UMSL out-scoring the Rangers 18-2 in that category.

UW-Parkside looks to re-group when it travels to Rockhurst for a 3:00 p.m. CST game Saturday, Dec. 4. That game can be heard live on WRJN 1400AM and on the internet at www.gatewaysportsweb.org
