The UW-Parkside men's basketball team has played in three tight games to open the 2010-11 season, the last of which went their way in a 79-75 victory over Northwood. The game was played on a neutral floor at Saginaw Valley State Saturday night.
The Rangers led throughout the vast majority of the game, taking a 20-9 lead early, losing the advantage, then heading the Timberwolves by two at 37-35 at halftime.
The second half started in a similar manner, with Parkside vaulting to a 55-41 margin, just 5 minutes into the stanza. Northwood battled its way back once again, but this time could never regain the lead.
A pair of key free throws with 53 seconds left by
Leneal Harris put Parkside up 78-70. From there the Rangers held off their foes to pick up its first win of the young season.
Northwood fell to 1-4.
Tim Baines and Harris led the Rangers attack with 19 points apiece.
Ryan Callozzo came off the bench to score 18 points. He was 4-5 from the floor including a 3-4 effort from behind the arc. Callozzo also found his way to the free throw line, making good on seven of eight attempts.
Jeremy Saffold was limited to seven points; however, he pulled down nine rebounds, dished out two assists and had a pair of blocked shots.
Parkside shot 49 percent from the floor in the contest.
Next up for the Rangers is a Sunday, Nov. 28, contest against Michigan Tech. The game tips off in the DeSimone Gymnasium at 3:00 p.m. The Huskies have won their first three games and will play two more before heading to Somers.
