It didn't look good for the UW-Parkside men's basketball team in Rensselaer, Indiana, Saturday afternoon. The Rangers were down 11 to the Pumas, who appeared ready to blow out their guests. UWP forged their way back into the game and took a brief lead, but in the end it was the more experienced Saint Joseph's club which posted an 82-72 victory.
The Pumas led by 10 at 49-39, 2 minutes into the second half. The Rangers got within 49-47 with 15:19 to go, but a 5-0 Puma run put some distance between the two teams. Another charge mid-way through the first half gave the Rangers a 58-56 advantage.
The teams traded hoops until the late stages. With the scored tied at 72-72 with 2:24 left in the game, the Pumas pulled away, scoring the next six points. The Rangers were forced to play chase and foul which accounted for the final margin of 10.
Jeremy Saffold was a standout for Parkside with 25 points. Jamere Dismukes ran the point and tallied 15 points to go with three assists and a steal. Zach Blesich and Grant Johnson notched 10 each.
The Pumas had five in double figures led by Andrew Helmer with 17.
Each team shot 50 percent in the game. Turnovers plagued UW-Parkside. The Rangers turned it over 15 times in the first half and 24 for the game.
The Rangers look to re-group against nationally ranked Drury Thursday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the DeSimone Gymnasium.
