The Indianapolis women's basketball team came into a tough environment in the DeSimone Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The nation's No. 2 ranked team faced a Ranger team which had won 16 in a row on the home floor and a crowd of 1,213, the largest crowd ever to witness a UW-Parkside women's home basketball game.
The Rangers only led on a couple of instances, by two points, but it was all Greyhounds as they posted an impressive 72-59 victory. The 'Hounds moved to 21-0 on the season. A total of 19 of those victories were by double digits.
Indianapolis won despite the Rangers out-rebounding their guests, 38-27. Plus, the Rangers had a far-better shooting percentage, 51 percent to 40 percent. A big key was three-point shots and turnovers. Indy made good on 10 three point shots, firing 29 attempts. The Rangers were 0-3. In the turnover category, Parkside turned the ball over 19 times compared to just eight for Indy.
Indianapolis led by nine at one point in the first half, but settled for a 29-24 gap at halftime. The Rangers forged into a 35-35 tie on a basket by Kristen Ruchti underneath with 14:50 to go in the game.
A pair of three-balls by Indy's Jessica Canary mid-way through the second half allowed the guests to pull away again, this time for good.
Samantha Meissel, who averages over 20 points per game for the Greyhounds, was limited to 17 points. Canary added 15 points which included the hat trick in three-point shots.
Amanda Gibson led the way for Parkside with 15 points.
The Rangers (18-4, 10-3 GLVC) will have a full week in between competitions. They will travel to division rival Lewis Saturday, Feb. 6, at 5:30 p.m.
