Rangers take 16-0 QU to OT

Box Score

Quincy came to the DeSimone Gymnasium with a perfect 15-0 record and ranked No. 14 in the nation in NCAA Division II. The Ranger men's basketball team battled the Hawks and forced an overtime, but bowed to the mighty Hawks, 77-74.

Blocked shots were key to the Quincy win. Grant Johnson had a break-a-way potential dunk blocked from behind with 22 seconds left in regulation play. That allowed Quincy to keep their unbeaten string alive, sending the game into overtime at 70-70.

In the extra session, the Hawks scored the first four points and the Rangers the next four. Two blocked shots by the Hawks in the final minute of play turned back a Ranger comeback effort.

Still, the Rangers had a chance to tie on the game's last possession. Grant Johnson had a defender in his face from behind the arc and his off-balanced shot was off the mark as the buzzer sounded.

Quincy is now 16-0 and 7-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. UWP fell to 7-11 overall and 2-7 in the GLVC.

Jeremy Saffold, who thrilled the crowd by hitting a 55-footer to end the first half, led the Rangers in scoring with 18 points. Sam Katula came off the bench and sparked the Rangers with 17 points. Johnson added 14.

Jamere Dismukes, despite his point-guard status, led the Rangers in rebounding with 11.

Justin Brock had a monster game for the Hawks with 19 points and 19 rebounds.

The Rangers hit the road for games at Maryville and Missouri S&T Thursday and Saturday respectively.
