Neither Kentucky Wesleyan nor UW-Parkside could find the back of the net in the first half of a men's soccer game at Wood Road Field Sunday afternoon. But all that changed in a big way in the second half as the Rangers, led by Niklas Boedts, scored a 6-2 win over the Panthers.
Boedts, who scored four goals in the contest, tallied at an even 1 minute into the second half, on a header, assisted by Kinkade Lo.
“An assist should go to Jason Zitzke (associate head coach) as well,” explained UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. “At halftime, he wanted Kinkade Lo in the game up top as a striker, which is something we normally do not do.”
Lo, a freshman, won a loose ball in the first minute of the second half, controlled it, then served it to Boedts, who did the rest.
Kentucky Wesleyan answered, however, 2 minutes and 23 second later, with a tally from Luke Church. Boedts then scored the next three goals to put the game away.
“In the first half offensively, we were moving too fast. We were going a thousand miles per hour and needed to slow things down,” reasoned Zitzke. “We were more deliberate in the second half with our attack, whereas we had guys running out of control in the first half.”
Boedts scored the second goal on assists from Johnson Thao and Adrian Magana at 55:47. Boedts buried a penalty kick just under 3 minutes later and notched another from Andrew Krenzien at 68:17. Boedts now has seven goals on the season.
“Boedts was the man of the match,” cited Zitzke. “He had great finishes today and was calm in the box which is what is needed to score goals.”
Freshman Austin Robb came off the bench to score his third goal of the season with an assist from Dennis Orellana, and Jon Bebeau scored his fourth of the season to wrap up the scoring. The Panthers scored their second goal after the Rangers had their fifth in the bank.
Greg Fischer played between the pipes for 76 minutes and made two saves for the winners. Palani Apuakehau finished up in net.
The Rangers put 13 shots on goal, making good on nearly half.
“Adrian Magana, as a defensive midfielder, and Kinkade Lo, as an attacking player, helped pick up the pace and clean up the game in the second half,” complimented Zitzke of the Ranger reserves.
UW-Parkside now has an impressive 7-1-1 overall record which includes a 3-1-1 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Kentucky Wesleyan dropped to 2-7 overall and 0-5 in league play.
The Rangers will be on the road for their next two games, at Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky Friday and Sunday respectively.
