Rangers hold off Lewis

Amy Selk

Box Score

It went down to the wire, but in the end the Rangers had secured their 18th win of the season, the second most in school history (20 int the 2004-05 season is the record). The team hung on to beat Lewis, 57-56.

Ironically, the fact that Lewis had only three team fouls late in the game, hurt them. The team was forced to foul late, and committed only their third foul of the second half with 24 seconds left. The Rangers were still four Lewis fouls away from the bonus.

The Flyers fouled again with 20 seconds left on the clock. The Rangers turned the ball over on the inbounds pass and the ball went over to Lewis.

Jenny Turpel missed an inside shot for the Flyers and teammate Jenna Mooberry was called for a foul, giving the ball to the Rangers. With 2.5 seconds left, the Rangers successfully inbounded the ball as Jadee Rooney dribbled and avoided defenders as the buzzer sounded to secure the win.

The Rangers are now  18-8 overall and 14-3 in the GLVC. See: http://www.glvcsports.org/sport.asp?path=wbball

Lewis dropped to 15-11 and 11-6.

Brittany Hogen had a double-double for the Rangers with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Rooney chipped in 11 points and Brittany Beyer logged 10 points and 9 rebounds. Amanda Gibson dished out 9 assists.

The Rangers, ranked No. 7 in the region, have one more regular season game left. The contest will be played at Indianapolis Saturday, Feb. 28, at noon CST. It can be heard live at : www.gatewaysportsweb.org
