Takin' care of business at Harris-Stowe

Box Score

The Ranger men's soccer team got the result it wanted in a rare mid-week non-conference road game Wednesday afternoon. The squad treked to St. Louis and beat hosting Harris-Stowe, 2-1.

"The field conditions were challenging," noted UW-Parkside head coach Rick Kilps. Pumps were used to remove water from the field after heavy rain in the days prior. Sand was even used to mask moist areas.

UW-Parkside scored quickly, 6:50 into the game. Niklas Boedts scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season on a through ball set up by Spencer Bursten and Johnson Thao.

The Rangers extended their lead to 2-0 at 31:12. Jose Alfaro logged his second goal of the year on a free kick from the sideline which soared over the head of Harris-Stowe goalkeeper Colby Poindexter. The score remained, 2-0, Rangers, at halftime.

"We played solid defensively and offensively in the first half," said Kilps. "In the second half, we may have been a bit too relaxed and that turned the game a little."

Harris-Stowe's Lucas Rodriguez scored an unassisted goal off of a scramble 7 minutes into the second half. The Rangers shut down their hosts the rest of the way and earned their 10th win of the season and are now 10-2-2.

Harris-Stowe, an NAIA affiliate, dropped to 5-4-1.

"We did what we had to do to get out of there with a win," added Kilps. The coach cited the play of Andrew Krenzien off the bench for his play in the back.

Parkside fired six shots on goal, while Harris-Stowe had four. Greg Fischer was the triumphant netminder, picking up his fifth win of the season.

The Rangers return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Sunday, Oct. 11, at Lewis. Kickoff in Romeoville, Illinois, is set for 2:30 p.m.
