The UW-Parkside women's basketball team has never lost on Alumni Day and gave the home crowd something to cheer about, again, in a huge way. The Rangers beat defending national champion and No. 2 ranked Northern Kentucky, 60-50.
It was the highest ranked team that any UW-Parkside women's basketball team has ever beat.
The Rangers only trailed once, at 11-10. Amanda Gibson hit back-to-back three point shots to put the Rangers up 19-11, capping a 9-0 run.
UW-Parkside led by 10 at 28-18 at halftime.
Northern Kentucky forged to within three at 33-30, but the Rangers pulled away again, this time on a 7-0 run. Brittany Beyer scored underneath to finish off the rally.
The Rangers made good on 22 of 26 free throws, not allowing the Norse to creep in closer, especially late in the contest. Both teams featured a stingy defense. NKU shot 35 percent while the Rangers shot 37 percent from the floor.
Gibson and Jadee Rooney each scored 14 points. Brittany Hogen pulled down nine rebounds to go with seven points.
UW-Parkside won the battle of the boards, 34-27. Each team had only 10 turnovers.
"This is a good confidence booster for our kids," said UW-Parkside head coach Jenny Kenesie. "We were coming off of two straight losses at home and we wanted to re-establish the home court. We played extremely well on the defensive end. The players committed to playing defense and that won us a game."
The Rangers tied Northern Kentucky atop the Eastern Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, each with a 9-2 record. The Norse are now 17-2 overall, while the Rangers are 13-7.
