Cedarville (Ohio) was the run-away winner of the 30th annual Midwest Open Cross Country Meet, held on the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course on the campus of UW-Parkside. Cedarville, ranked No. 1 in the nation in NAIA, scored a low team score of 24 points, a huge margin ahead of second place Indiana Wesleyan, ranked No. 14 in the NAIA, with 103 points.

Host UW-Parkside, which finished 12th at the NCAA Division II nationals last season, was third with 116 points. This was the first meet of the season for the Rangers.

Individually, UW-Parkside's Jessica Monson (formerly Jessica Lamp, Powers Lake, Wis./Westosha) was an easy winner. She led from the very beginning of the race and stretched it out to a 21-second win. Her time for the 5K course was 17:44. Nicole Santos of Cedarville was the runner-up at 18:05. Both runners are seniors.

“Jess did a fine job, all by herself,” said UW-Parkside coach Mike DeWitt. “She was in control the whole race and ran nice, even splits.”

Cedarville took the fourth through seventh spots to seal the team win. A total of 222 runners finished on a 79-degree day in Somers.

UW-Parkside had three runners in the top 21 and all five of its scorers were in the top 44 among collegiate runners (this was an open meet).

“For the first meet of the season and a warm day, I thought our ladies did a nice job as a whole,” cited DeWitt. “I was looking at scoring in the 100-120 range and when that happened, it was a good day.”

Heidi Ertl (Racine, Wis./Park) cleared the course in 19:30. She was 13th among her contemporaries. Other UW-Parkside scorers include Hope Christie (Somers, Wis./Bradford), 21st, 19:57; Angie Adams (Ontario, Wis./Brookwood), 37th, 20:17; and Whitney Olson (Oconto Falls, Wis./Octonto Falls), 44th, 20:30.
