It was only the second road win of the year and it was a good one for the UW-Parkside men's basketball team. The Rangers overcame an eight-point deficit in the first half, led by that same margin at one point in the second half, and held off Indianapolis, 77-72. The win clinched a winning season for the third consecutive year. It is the first time three straight winning seasons have been strung together for UW-Parkside since 1985-88.
With 9:24 to go in the first half, the Rangers found themselves on the wrong end of a 23-15 score. A fiercely defended three-point shot by Tyrone Deacon at the first half buzzer completed the comeback and left the Rangers with a 37-35 lead.
After a Greyhound bucket to start the second half which tied the score at 37-37, the Rangers took the lead for good. Brad Ferstenou hit a pair of foul shots and he then followed up with a bucket inside to put his team up by four.
The lead stood at 71-68 with just under 1 minute to go in the game. LaVontay Fenderson found his way underneath for a hoop to up the score to 74-69 with 46 seconds left. After a Greyhound free throw, Dave Keane connected on a couple of clutch free throws for the Rangers with 34 second left, giving the visitors a 75-69 advantage. A key defensive stop and subsequent layup by Fenderson put the game away.
The win moved the Ranger overall record to 14-11 with two games left on the schedule. The team is 7-10 in the GLVC. Indianapolis was knocked out of post-season consideration and, like the Rangers, is 7-10 in league play. The 'Hounds are 13-12 overall.
Ferstenou led the Rangers in scoring with 18 points. Kyle Clark tallied 16 points. Fenderson added 14 and Deacon rounded out the double digit scorers with a dozen points.
The Rangers shot 51 percent from the floor in each half. UW-P out-rebounded Indianapolis, 38-31.
DeAndre Brock paced the Greyhounds with 19 points.
UW-Parkside will close out the season with a pair of home games. The team will host Northern Kentucky Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The fans will say 'farewell' to the seniors in their final game Saturday, March 1, versus Bellarmine at 3:00 p.m. It will also be Alumni Day.
